I AM BEN WIID, BUT

WHO AM I?

Upon Graduating from Advertising in 2016, a friend and I decided to buy a very cheap diving mask to try something a little different to our usual beach visits. Little did I know, that this small purchase would have such a big impact on my life.

I put the mask on, and waddled into knee deep water in and amongst the other locals swimming.I can't quite remember exactly what i was thinking upon initially putting my face underwater, but  I'd call it enlightenment. My mind was opened to an entire new world that exists right below the surface; massive schools of fish, crabs, corals, slugs, unimaginable and uncountable life forms, all within knee deep water. It was at this moment, I knew, this was a place I needed to explore.

Within my short time diving, I've been lucky enough to do freediving courses with South African freediving champion Hanli Prinsloo, and olympic swimming champion Peter Marshal. I've got to work closely with this power couple, as an IAmWater coach, giving back to the community and educating the youth about our fragile oceans. Some of my photography has been featured on National Geographic, a true privilege and ambitious goal I honestly never thought i would reach.

Here I sit, a couple years later, and my obsession with the oceans is only growing. I could never have guessed I would have developed such a deep passion for the ocean and all its residents. My ambition now is simply to share the magic of the ocean with the world, and attempt to reestablish a natural connection with the ocean, that we all possess, but seem to have lost somewhere along the way.
