SHARKS

WHAT'S UP WITH SHARKS?

Sharks have been here for a long time, a very long time. We know they have existed from at least 420 million years ago- this means they have existed longer than trees! Sharks have gotten a bad wrap in the media about being ruthless predators, which they are; but they are also the most relaxed prehistoric creatures that react instinctively, and with a bit of self awareness and control, diving with these creatures is a truly wild and incredible experience.

7 Gill Cow Shark, Shark Alley

In the waters of Cape Town, we can find a wide variety of sharks. Everything from massive Great Whites, to the smallest shy sharks, no longer than your fore-arm. Sevengill sharks are one of our most precious residents, and is one of the most ancient sharks in the world, thats biology hasn't changed in millions of years. Sharks have been relatively vacant in Cape Town lately, and this is due to Orca in the bay, who have decided shark livers are delicious and nutritious.

Pyjama Shark, Seaforth

Diving in Cape Town, you are bound to see sharks. On an average dive you are very likely to see a number of species, as well as their eggs. The kelp forests along the coast provide perfect protection and refuge from predators, giving many sharks opportunity to hunt and lay their eggs in piece. Pyjama Sharks are sleek and slender sharks, though beauty aside, they are more aggressive pound for pound than Great White Shark.

Puffadder Shyhark, Seaforth

The skin of a shark, technically is not skin at all. Its made of tiny little teeth, laid over each other in an armour-like style. This Makes sharks a hydrodynamic, powerful missile in the ocean. If you have ever felt shark skin, you will know it feels like sandpaper. And not too long ago, it would be used for that very purpose.
